Making Ocean was the most exhilarating of experiences. Creating a piece of work, inspired by John Butlers amazing, relentless evocative music allowed a unique sort of freedom. It has become a celebration of rhythm and stillness of energy and exhaustion of the instant and the reflective. It's a moment in time that drew from us every shout and scream we could have imagined and helped us move together to understand the connection between each other, both onstage and off it.
"Ocean by Jamaal Burkmar to the music of John Butler is a rousing ensemble piece, with movement in knots, lines and swirls, with dancers in a vigorous communal celebration that allows individuals to perform their own riffs, emerging joyfully from the group. The energy is almost palpable in the throbbing intensity of the sweeping movements and the purposeful running from side to side, which lifts the piece. The audience cheers told their own story" Mike Dixon, Dance Europe
