Jamaal burkmar - Jburkmar@gmail.com
Originally from Leicester, Jamaal trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. His interest in dance was piqued by his younger bother Zane, who wanted Tap dance lessons at a local school. In 2005, Jamaal joined ACE Dance and Music’s youth company.
After a particularly difficult year in which Jamaal’s passion for the art waned, he considered dropping out of his course and quitting dance completely. After deciding to finish his course hoping that the passion would come back, Jamaal was able to rally and find inspiration from other sources, especially music, movies and literature. This inspiration eventually led to the creation of a piece he made in his second year entitled ‘Ocean’. The piece was commissioned for VERVE, the postgraduate company at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance by Gianluca Vincentini the artistic director at the time. ‘Ocean’ proved successful with audiences in UK and beyond. Whilst VERVE toured ‘Ocean’ nationally and in Europe, Jamaal continued his degree at Northern, whilst being commissioned to create works on a few youth groups, the most successful of which ‘The Pale Blue Dot’ was crafted on the new young artists in ACE’s youth company.
After graduating, Jamaal maintained his relationships with Gianluca, Yorkshire Dance and NSCD and continued to make work in the Leeds. It was in this first year after leaving the institution that Jamaal’s ‘Ocean’ was reworked a third time on a second group of dancers in VERVE to be performed for a final time at the Dance UK conference in April of 2015. During this period Jamaal was also successful in gaining his first grants for the arts award for the creation of a short work called ‘Sonder’. It was during the summer of the same year that Jamaal applied and won the NACA whilst also garnering commissions at Edge Hill, NSCD and a few universities. For the last year Jamaal has been slowly preparing for this showcase and in the future hopes to continue sharing his piece 16 Bars.
